Your Maine State Assembly leadership, supported by AST, is considering filing legislation that would require all practicing surgical technologists to be graduates of accredited surgical technology programs and hold the CST credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). This important patient safety legislation would require health care facilities (hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers) to employ only certified (CST) techs. We can’t accomplish this without YOU!
Please fill out the questionnaire below to indicate your support of this important initiative.
1. Review the Model Bill. Would you support legislation that requires certification for all STs, where currently employed STs are also grandfathered in?
2. AST will support the initiative with a lobbyist, documents, talking points, templates and information. Would you be willing to lead or join the team of legislative “champions” who would be responsible for the campaign?
3. Would you participate in any of the activities that will be necessary to have an effective campaign?
a. Visit your state legislator (senator or representative) in his/her district?
b. Visit your state legislator in Augusta at the State Capitol?
c. Write letters in support of the legislation?
d. Get colleagues (surgeons, OR managers, hospital administrators) to write?
e. Make phone calls to state legislators?
f. Testify at committee hearings in support of the legislation?
g. Participate in a “Mock Surgery” at the Capitol to highlight the importance of surgical technologists in the OR?
h. Write letters to the media and others supporting the legislation?
i. Meet with your surgical colleagues and other stakeholders?
Your participation is essential! If this is a cause you can believe in, and you are willing to commit, you can make a difference. You will make all the difference.
